In July 2021, the Marine Corps Systems Command began distributing these hearing enhancement devices to infantry units. The headsets are designed to protect Marines from hazardous noise levels and facilitate sound localization, allowing them to accurately determine the direction of voices or other sounds. Chief Warrant Officer 4 David Tomlinson emphasized the importance of these devices, stating, "This hearing enhancement device protects Marines from noise levels that are above safe hearing levels. It also allows for sound localization, which means you can tell where a voice or noise is coming from."
The initial rollout targets experimental battalions on both the East and West Coasts, with plans to extend distribution to all infantry and "infantry-like" battalions over the next two fiscal years. Each infantry Marine within a battalion is set to receive a set of these headsets. The ruggedized design ensures functionality in extreme cold and jungle heat, making them suitable for diverse operational environments.
Two versions of the headsets are being fielded. Both models allow users to hear messages transmitted through their communication devices, such as handheld or man-packable radios. One version includes a push-to-talk adapter and cables, enabling users to communicate over the network. A notable feature allows Marines to listen to radio traffic even when the system is powered down, maintaining communication while conserving battery life. Tomlinson highlighted the system's goal: "A major goal of this system is to increase communication in loud, noisy environments so Marines can continue to do their job."
The adoption of these advanced headsets aligns with the Marine Corps' broader efforts to enhance operational effectiveness and safety. By integrating modern technology, the Corps aims to improve communication capabilities and protect Marines' hearing during high-noise combat situations.
